Everybody knows that Jason Kidd is the active leader for career triple doubles...  But which active player is currently second?

Odom?

I'm pretty sure Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double.

Ok.  Found it.

"Statistically, one need look no further than the numbers Robertson put up in 1961-62, just his second year in the league: 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game-an average of a triple-double for an entire season. Not even Magic Johnson or Larry Bird could match those numbers."

Odom is not second on the active list...  And Oscar (I think) is number one overall, though inactive...

Still don't know the answer, but here's a couple additional noveties on the same theme.

  • Double-triple-double: this feat requires at least 20 of any 3 statistics. Wilt Chamberlain is the only player to have accomplished this; in a 1968 game, Chamberlain's statistics were 22 points, 25 rebounds, and 21 assists.
  • Longest continuous streak: Wilt Chamberlain also holds the record for the most consecutive triple-doubles. From March 8, 1968 to March 20, 1968 he recorded a triple-double in 9 straight games.

Woohoo!

I wonder if he would be number one if he stayed healthy.

Number one active, possibly.  Number one all time, no way.  Kidd has less than half of Oscar's total.

Can anyone find a fuller list?  Here's what I have for all-time...

181 Oscar Robinson
138 Magic Johnson
 78 Wilt Chamberlain
 77 Jason Kidd
 59 Larry Bird

That's all I found, and I don't think even that little bit was in one place.

Just to note that both Wilt and O are probably understated due to steals and blocks not being counted.

Yeah, I got the trivia question from watching the Orlando game last night...  They always have some good questions on the telecasts...

I found this list, but it's a little dated.  It was last updated 6/20/06

Triple-Doubles:

1. Oscar Robertson 181
2. Magic Johnson 138
3. Wilt Chamberlain 78
4. Jason Kidd 75
5. Larry Bird 59
6. Fat Lever 48

Other current players:
Grant Hill 29
Chris Webber 21
Kobe Bryant 14
Kevin Garnett 13
LeBron James 10
(In case you're curious,
Michael Jordan had 28)

From the New York Post...

Oscar Robertson will almost certainly remain the only player ever to finish a season averaging a triple-double, but Jason Kidd is actually making a run at it.

After he passed Wilt Chamberlain and set the record with his 79th career triple-double, the point guard stood at 13.3 points per game, 9.6 assists and 8.7 rebounds. While that may sound like he's close, Kidd acknowledged he is still a long way off.

"I'm a ways away,'' said Kidd, who had 12 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in Monday's win over Memphis at the Meadowlands. "[The average] went up, but I still need 30 rebounds one night to get that far up."

Kidd has been excellent all season, and the fact that he remains off the pace is striking to him.

"That just shows how difficult it is,'' Kidd said after practice yesterday.

The mere fact that there is a conversation about his prospects show what type of player Kidd is and, to head coach Lawrence Frank, how much he has changed.

"His game has evolved,'' said Frank, who first saw Kidd as a high school player when the coach was on Bob Knight's staff at Indiana. "He was impressive. He was dunking."

The high-flying aspect of Kidd's game has now all but disappeared, but he has more than made up for it.

"It's crazy what he does,'' Frank said. "His will is unbelievable. That's what separates him from everyone else."

And while the season-long triple-double might remain out of Kidd's reach, Vince Carter has another goal for his teammate.

"We need Jason to finish with 100 career triple-doubles [this year],'' Carter said.
