What is the value of a 14th rounder

"And I thought to myself... Thank you very much for this beautiful house, and this beautiful wife, and this beautiful team, and these beautiful draft picks... but... what is the value of a 14th rounder Gangster G?"

Original Recipe 2009 Draft - 14th Round

Season Round Pick City - FirstName LastName K
2009 14 210 FrenchLick - JJ Hickson
2009 14 212 Valley Forge - Flip Murray
2009 14 213 Oscar Robertson - Hamed Haddadi
2009 14 214 Cupey - Linas Kleiza K
2009 14 215 Provo - Nicolas Batum
2009 14 216 Valley Forge - Goran Dragic
2009 14 217 Oscar Robertson - Mickael Pietrus
2009 14 218 Northampton - Sasha Vujacic K
2009 14 219 Oscar Robertson - Rodney Carney
2009 14 220 Oaksterdam - Glen Davis
2009 14 221 Wick - Travis Outlaw K
2009 14 222 Wick - Aaron Gray K
2009 14 223 Baltimore - Shelden Williams
2009 14 224 Grandview - Chris Andersen K

And so went the 14th round of the Original Recipe draft of 2009.

I see two quality picks: Chris Anderson and JJ Hickson and one was a keeper.   Major props to roeder on the foresite (or mad luck) behind the Hickson selection.

I see a handful of players that likely won't be drafted in any round this year.  (I'm looking at yous Goran Dragic, Hamed Haddadi and Sasha Vujacic.)

I also see the 2nd pick of the round is M.I.A. but in the end life is what it is and no more and as such these data files are no more than illusions of what we think they are.   And we think there was no 2nd pick.

Original Recipe 2008 Draft - 14th Round

Season Round Pick City - FirstName LastName K
2008 14 209 Trinidad - Julian Wright
2008 14 210 FrenchLick - Anderson Varejao
2008 14 211 Baltimore - Oleksiy Pecherov
2008 14 212 Oscar Robertson - Shareef Abdur-Rahim
2008 14 213 New York - Sean Williams
2008 14 214 Oscar Robertson - Francisco Garcia
2008 14 215 Oaksterdam - Sarunas Jasikevicius K
2008 14 216 Oscar Robertson - Shaun Livingston
2008 14 217 San Juan - Marc Gasol
2008 14 218 Fort Myers - Josh McRoberts
2008 14 219 Cupey - Luke Walton K
2008 14 220 Kalamazoo - Nick Fazekas
2008 14 221 Wick - Luther Head K
2008 14 223 Northampton - Alexander Johnson K
2008 14 224 San Juan - Luis Scola K

Once again I see two mad good picks, an Argentine and a Spaniard. Both selected by San Juan.  One as a keeper.

Francisco Garcia was kept in the 12th in 09 (Provo) but has not been designated in exchange for a 10th rounder this year (Provo again).

"Likely to go undrafted this year" notables:  Sarunas Jasikevicius, Abdur-Rahim, Alexander Johnson, and Josh McRoberts (unless Doug's consumed enough tequila by drafts end).

Mo Williams an excellent keeper (not bad for the 3rd player selected in the 16th of '05)

Jarret Jack was a serviceable player (projected to be drafted in the 14th this season).

Special Shout out to Wayne Simiem who might never get mentioned on our site again.

The best 14th round selection we've seen by a country mile, Mr. Devin Harris, is still playing out his days in sunny Valley Forge five season's later.

Planinic, Rebraca, Podkolizine, Ndudi! and Shawn Bradley .  Now THAT is Gangster.

2004 14 221 Cupey - Earl Boykins
2004 14 222 Baltimore - Carlos Boozer K
2004 14 224 Kalamazoo - Marcus Haislip

Monsieur Boozer might have brought the Brocheese years of heartache with his blindman backstabbing karma, but he's head and shoulders the best player here.   And he was a keeper.

How about Szewczyck for best 14th round selection ever?

Original Recipe - 14th round - 2003

Season Round Pick City - FirstName LastName K
2003 14 209 Baltimore - Gerald Wallace K
2003 14 210 Valley Forge - Jared Jeffries
2003 14 211 San Juan - Scott Padgett
2003 14 212 Trinidad - Nene Hilario
2003 14 213 DC - Jon Barry
2003 14 214 Harlem - Shane Battier
2003 14 215 Bay Area - Samuel Dalembert
2003 14 216 Canton - Brent Barry
2003 14 218 Wiscobich - PJ Brown
2003 14 219 Pittsburgh - Voshon Lenard K
2003 14 220 Washington - Chris Andersen K
2003 14 221 Kalamazoo - Juan Dixon
2003 14 222 Baltimore - Shammond Williams
2003 14 223 New York - Kenny Anderson
2003 14 224 Trinidad - Etan Thomas K

Hilario a great pick-up by the All-Stars.  Though they would have had to keep him for half a decade to get a full season out of him.

Talk about Deja Birdman. Who would have thought back in '03 that Chris Andersen would be considered an excellent 14th round keeper again six years?

The Brocheese displayed incredible forsight with the selection of Gerald Wallace. Sadly it was way before his time (and prime).

So there you have it.  The 14th rounder is pretty much worthless.  At least in an Original Recipe league that drafts two months before the start of the season, over labor weekend.  In a drunken stupor.

What might this look like in other leagues that draft 5-8 weeks later you ask?

2009 14 224 Lum - Darrell Arthur Crazy 88s

With the notable exception of Rudy Fernandez (Greatest Show), even the keepers suck. Adam Morrison?  Ouch.

The best generally available, recurring picks, appear to be Mareese Speights and Darrell Arthur (each selected on five occasions).

Robin Lopez was a pretty nice gamble (Turnpike, Sugar Ray, J-Dub) as were Javalee McGee (Travisham) and Mario Chalmers (Crazy 88s)

Otherwise over the top suckitude pretty much prevailed thoughout.

I don't even know who Richard Hendrix is.

Goran Dragic will get drafted, hater!  He's currently ranked 222nd...
